Domestic Goddess Olympics

Yesterday I:
  • Washed, dried, folded and put away 4 loads of laundry
  • Washed, dried, folded and put away 2 loads of towels
  • Stripped and remade 2 cribs, a king-sized bed
  • Washed, dried, folded and put away said sheets
  • Ironed 17 shirts (still have 16 to go), 4 pairs of pants, and 3 skirts
  • Swept and mopped my hardwood and vinyl floors
  • Scrubbed 3 toilets, 2 bathtubs, 1 shower, and 5 sinks
  • Shined 5 mirrors
  • Scrubbed down the fronts of 6 cabinets
  • Dusted every stick of furniture in my house
  • Dusted all the decorative items, knick-knacks, kitchy items, and books on all of the shelves in my house
  • Vacuumed all the carpet, including face and top of stairs (40 in all)
  • Swept my front porch, washed the entry way
  • Sprayed off the deck, and all furniture on it.
  • Mowed the front yard, used the trimmer/weed-wacker around the entire front and back yard, pulled about 500 weeds from my various garden areas
  • Killed about 25 wasps from a mean distance of 10 feet (not nearly close enough, but hey, they sting!)
  • Made Orange Pork Chops for dinner
  • Entertained my parents for 2 hours while they were digging up some of my plants that mom wanted to divide and transplant to her yard
  • Entertained the neighbor girl who came over to watch the TiVo'd episode of the Olympics with the Trampoline Final and the Gymnastics Parallel Uneven Bar Finals
  • Bathed to hooligans that pass as my children (how can a 7-month old baby be a hooligan?)
  • Put said hooligans to bed
  • Watched the Gold Medal Round of Women's Beach Volleyball
  • Finally turned out the light around 11:30 pm

Today, I am baking.

I have been given a batch of Amish Friendship Bread starter...for those of you who know...you understand my dilemma...the bread is awesome, but every 10 days? We're trying to not eat refined sugars at our house, and I cannot substitute in anything for the good old white flour, and white sugar...grrrrrrrrr... Of course, this leads me to say...If you know of any healthier options for the recipe for this bread...PLEASE pass it along to me!

I was going to bake Turtle Brownies, but have run out of oil, have no applesauce, and am at a loss as to what to do...the kids are awake and fed, but do I really want to go to the grocery store only to buy oil? Especially when I have to go tomorrow for beverages and dessert items for our annual neighborhood BBQ...I think the brownies can wait...they will have to.

Yesterday, I went to the Church, and cleaned out the closet of supplies that are there for our Moms' group. It took me all of about 15 minutes...and now I wait to find out how I need to order/purchase the needed items for our twice-monthly brunch meetings, and if there are other things we need for the year.

Mom and Dad watched Tiny Princess and Captain Chaos for me while I was gone, which helped...I'd much rather be in the classroom in the farthest reaches of the Church when I know there are other folks around, as opposed to going at night, after BB got home from work, which wasn't until 7pm last night. Ick...

After I got home, my parents surprised me by taking the kids and I to lunch. It was nice to have someone else assist with Captain Chaos, and keep him occupied by answering his questions, and to have someone hold the baby after she ate her lunch, so I could eat mine while it was actually hot! What a novelty that was!

I never quite realized just how much it bothers me to not eat my food when it is fresh, and piping hot from a kitchen somewhere until the other night. I cooked Orange Roughy, and a fabulous dinner to go along with it...as I took the cooked fish and served it up, Tiny Princess protested, and I ended up giving her more cereal and vegetables...by the time I got to my dinner, it was cold. Now I don't have a problem reheating items like rice and cooked vegetables in the microwave, but have you ever eaten re-heated fish? Seriously, y'all, I thought I was going to lose my dinner...it was awful. I was so disappointed, but I refused to throw it out, and make myself something else...after all, that would be wasteful, and let's face it...I am the model of frugality at our house right now.

We just had to move some assets around, and liquidate some of them to pay the stinking credit card bill off. How lousy is that?

We had been doing so well, and the 6 weeks before we went to Oregon were horrible! We bought tickets, rented a car, bought new clothes, bought some nifty luggage...all of which was much needed...however...we spent more than twice what we normally do each month just in preparation for the trip! That didn't include that hotel stay, and the several meals out, or the 2 tanks of gas at $4.11 a gallon...

Needless to say, we are staying home, and I am now racking my brain to determine just what I can bake for a treat that doesn't require oil...or applesauce.

I am tired of harvesting my limited produce, and preparing it for long-term storage. I am waiting for the 10 days of curing for my acorn squash (that I picked too early) to pass, so that we may attempt to cook it, and have a bit of a change. I never thought I'd be tired of tomatoes...but seriously, how many ways can you prepare tomatoes? We've had them stuffed with tuna salad, chicken salad, Spanish Rice, and a cheesey concoction that I made up which included beef, cheese, chilies, and garlic. All were very good, but if I have to eat one more bowl of tomato and cucumber salad, I think I might cry...of course, when you have the vegetables separate, they are yummy, combined, they are yummy, but I think my level of tolerance has diminished greatly...perhaps next year, we'll be successful with green beans, lettuce, spinach, and berries. I'd also like to try my hand at something like corn, but am not sure of the best type to plant...and how many stalks do you need to feed a family of 4 through the fall, winter, spring and summer before the next crop is ready?

Well, my Friendship Bread is ready to take out of the pans, the children are happily playing on the floor in the family room watching Between the Lions...thank goodness for the invention of television and children's programming on Public Broadcast stations!!!!!

Now, I'm off to dump the bread out, and finish the ironing before I have to feed my family lunch.

Oh...by the way...BB gets to have his department's Summer Fling today...they get to have a catered BBQ, with amazing food, ice cream, and then they get to go play a round of golf on the company...how much do I not like my husband right now? More so when I know he'll come home tonight and say "I'm so tired" and sit around while I make and clean up dinner, feed and bathe the children, and get them to bed, while I feed the animals, entertain and keep up meaningful conversation, and try not to lose my mind...

Calgon...take me away!!!!!
