A Few Quiet Moments

Ahhhh...peace and quiet...at looong last...

What a crazy weekend it ended up being! Our flight, thankfully, left 30 minutes than we thought it did, so we had some extra time on Saturday morning. HOWEVER...we were up until 11pm Friday night, making sure everything was ready to go. YUCK!

We had an uneventful trip to the airport, quiet flight, and subsequent drive from the airport to the In-Law's house...where we were greeted by their freezing cold home...both physically and emotionally.

Let me tell you a little bit about it. First of all, it is a beautiful and well-built modular home, with a fun ranch-style floor plan. It is decorated with an ecclectic (read cluttered) style, including, but not limited to driftwood art, glass floats of all sizes and colors, watercolors, gorgeous antiques, and good old California light oak furniture with rounded corners. You see, my MIL swears that she grew up in a home that was decorated with heavy, dark wood furniture, heavy draperies on the windows, and there was no light. If you ask Grandma, she has pictures of said home, wherein, the furniture was dark, but the rest of the house and decorations were NOT a throwback to some medieval castle or vampire lair. The entire house is FULL of various pieces of stuff that have been collected over the years, some of which are family pieces, and worth quite a bit of money...the rest of which are "craft" pieces picked up at random over the years, and called "art".

Now, for those of you who choose to embrace the lighthouses painted on a dirty piece of wood that was floating in the ocean, and call it art, I apologize. I subscribe to the more classic definition of art...you know...Picasso, Monet, Dali...Ansel Adams...and like my furniture to have handles, not finger holds.

I know...I know...I'm demanding aren't I?

Well...after the refresher of just what a control-freak, martyr my dear MIL is (the last 72 hours have been filled with the complaining gossip she enjoys and how she is always right), we settled in, Captain Chaos adjusted nicely, and has been playing well, only causing her to move a spinning wheel circa 1880s. She has bribed him with toys and DVDs, and he will now share his cars with her, but will not snuggle...even a 17 month old can see just how prickly her nature is.

Today is her meeting of the finance committee for her HOA, and she has now been gone an hour.

I am enjoying being able to sit and crochet while Capt Chaos plays, and BB works from the other desk in their office (which is technically another living space, perhaps a dining room?

We had glorious weather on Sunday, and I woke at 3am Monday morning to go to the bathroom, and was lulled back to sleep by the pounding rain. It proceeded to rain and blow ALL DAY Monday...and today's local paper was full of stories of damage done by the 40 mph winds. Today it dawned clear, fresh, and around 50. The sun has been shining all day long, and we went for a long walk this morning while MIL's computer repair person was selling her a fully loaded laptop that she didn't need...

Tonight we dine on spaghetti...hard for me, as I'm so used to my family's recipe for sauce that has flavor, rather than MILs.

I think the hardest thing so far is that I have had to sit and do NOTHING for the last 72 hours. I tried to sweep the kitchen floor, and when I turned to pick up Capt Chaos' toys, she swooped in, swept and proceeded to wash the floor...

All I can say is, thanks to Inkling - OY!

Keep praying for our protection, and a harness on my tongue...I have already had several conversations in my head that are NOT graceful conversations, especially when directed to my MIL on our third day here!!!!!

prayers are going up for you. I wish I had something profound to say in this situation, but I can only empathize with you. I pray for you to be embrased by your BB and Captain Chaos' love and admiration. I pray this gives you wisdom, more compassion and understanding towards BB's upbringing and how you will be a better mother because of this knowledge, wisdom, and compassion. You are a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law. May the blessings be placed upon you during your visit. I look forward to reading your next post.

Honey, know that prayers are being sent up on your behalf from a little farm in the mid-west.

It's times like this I'm glad my in-laws live 1/2 mile down the road. I NEVER have to stay at their house.
