So I just learned that a bloggy friend is going to be home-schooling her boys next school year. On her blog, another home-school mom left a comment with the link to her blog. I peeked at it, and was so impressed!
I can't even begin to tell you just how much it amazes me that people can seriously do this, their children turn out normal (not socially stunted or emotionally scarred), and are often times leaps and bounds ahead of their public-school peers.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am a product of public schooling. I think they did a great job, but I also graduated a looong time ago (no, I am not telling you just how long) and times have changed.
Our school district always cites teacher to student ration, class size, diminished resources...and I'm always like "I made it through school without my own personal laptop, and I'm doing just fine", but then, I was on the early edge of the information age truly taking off...so I get that kids today do need to be in front of technology as much as possible...but still...shouldn't they also be taught the basic skills of Reading, writing and arithmetic? eh...I won't go there.
Since the day we found out we were expecting Captain Chaos almost 4 years ago, I have desired to have a better education that speaks to his needs, his learning style, his drive for whatever drives him...and now that I've spent the last almost 3 years with him on a 24-7 basis, I know deep in my heart that he will need more attention and time and special challenges to keep him from being the bad kid that's bored in class...which would require either private tutoring, charter school, or winning the PowerBall and having money for tuition at a private school...otherwise, it will be up to me to home school him, and feed his rapidly expanding brain capacity.
I know I could handle the basics up to a point, but I am seriously going to start brushing up on things that are currently my weaknesses...and you know what? I'm going to the library tomorrow to totally check out some history books.
Yup! History books...all so I can start loading my brain up on facts, timelines, motives, players, and outcomes to teach Captain Chaos history when he's ready for it.
Right now, however, I think I'll finish cleaning up my kitchen, and then go do some physical training on my Wii...that's important too, physical conditioning, right?!?!?!?!
