At The Unknown Housewife's Request, here is the recipe I ended up using last evening...
And I apologize, I called it cobbler, when it reality, it is a crisp...
The recipe was originally given to me for Fresh Apple Crisp, but I've since used it with fresh apples, fresh peaches, and a mix of fresh and frozen berries.
4 C fruit (If you use apples or peaches, peel and slice)
1 1/4 C brown sugar
1 C flour (plain flour)
1 C rolled oats (Good old Quaker brand "old fashioned" variety are my favorite)
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
2/3 C margarine or butter
Place fruit into bottom of 8x8 square pan. Mix remaining ingredients in a bowl, using a fork or pastry cutter until the shortening is cut into the flour etc, and it is a bit crumbly. Sprinkle over top of fruit. Bake at 375 F until the top is golden, and the fruit is fork-tender.
We eat ours "nekked", but you can enjoy it with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or even some sweetened heavy table cream.
Farmie- the casserole was awesome! I made a few changes, being as I didn't actually have beef ready to be cooked...but I used cooked and shredded chicken, a can of pinto beans that I drained and rinsed, and it was very yummy...I think it would be awesome with the beef...a bit more robust and rich, but I think its a keeper.
I did get the giggles when I pulled it out of the oven to sprinkle some cheese over top (I'm a cheese FREAK!!!!!) and it really did look like Freddy Krueger's face...good thing I'm not repulsed when I know what's gone into something, but I thought, how cool would that be to serve for a Halloween bash? Call it "Zombie Skin" or something for those who don't know Nightmare on Elm Street in any of its incarnations.

I'm so glad it turned out for you. I've never had it in it's "original" form with beans & ground beef.
I'll have to try your crisp recipe when my mouth is fully healed.
Yipppeeeeee!!! Thank you Princess !! Sarah x
