I am apparently not a good parent...or so I was made to feel this morning.
We had a "Park Day" for the Moms' Group that I'm a part of and the park that was chosen, while nice, large, with plenty of grassy areas and nice picnic tables...was right next to a part of the large creek/small river that runs through my town...no fences, no paved sidewalk, just the natural good old dirt and sand on the bank, which is about 3 feet above the 2 feet of water, which was rushing quite quickly through the area we were in.
Captain Chaos immediately saw "wawer" and wanted to go over and watch it. We walked over to look at it, and he started skidding and sliding down the bank. I caught him, juggled Tiny Princess, and promptly hauled him away from the water about 6 feet.
What, you might ask, makes me a bad parent? Not the fact that I let him near the water..but the fact that I hauled him away from the edge.
This, for the record, did not come from any of the moms there that I knew. It came from the random strangers that were there with their children and/or pets.
There is nothing I detest more than folks who sideline parent or marriage counsel. I know that I will make decisions in parenting my children that might not end up being the best. However, as you don't know me, or my children, my values, or my situation at the time, do not presume to judge me.
That being said, we ended up coming home about 15 minutes after we got there as it was too hot, Captain Chaos was disobeying, and on the verge of a meltdown due to the heat and being flat out tired, as well as being told not to do something that he wanted to do. On the way to the car, I overheard some other group of parents with their kids talking about how horrible it was that I yanked him back like I did...GRRRRRRRRRRR

To quote Ellen Griswald from National Lampoons Vacation
"Not one word or I'll split your lip as she holds her fist upto her aunt in the car."
